Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes agreed to a 10-year, $450 million extension of his contract. This makes the deal worth an NFL record and is the biggest sports deal made in history. Mahomes being the youngest player in the NFL history to win a Super Bowl and league MVP is an extraordinary leader and a credit to the Kansas City community announces Kansas City Chiefs. The deal could go up to $530 million if certain clauses are fulfilled in the coming ten years starting with the 2022 season. Mahomes also took to Twitter to confirm his new deal, posting a video of some of his best moments with the Chiefs, and writing: "Here to stay...!"
In total, Mahomes could earn up to $502.631 million over the next 12 years if he hits all of his incentives. The base value of his contract, including the next two seasons before his extension kicks in, is $477.631 million for an average of $39.8 million per year. Starting in 2022, Mahomes will make an average of $45 million per year. The total cash each year is made up of Mahomes' base salary, roster bonus, and workout bonus, not including signing bonus pay and incentives.
The Chiefs have rewarded Mahomes after he led the franchise to its first Super Bowl title in 50 years, inspiring them to victory over the San Francisco 49ers as MVP it February, following on from his league MVP award in 2018. Mahomes has a resume unlike any quarterback in the football history. He has registered 9,412 passing yards for 76 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 31 regular-season games so far for the Chiefs, having sat behind Alex Smith for the majority of his rookie year. Mahomes also had 1,474 passing yards for 13 touchdowns and two interceptions in five career playoff games. He dealt with numerous injuries this past season, including a dislocated kneecap on a seemingly innocent quarterback sneak that left him sidelined for a couple of games. He came back to lead the Chiefs to a long winning streak that culminated with a series of come-from-behind wins in the playoffs, including their second-half rally in the Super Bowl. "Since he joined the Chiefs just a few years ago, Patrick has developed into one of the most prolific athletes in all of the sports," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement about the quarterback.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid added: "I've had the privilege of coaching a lot of incredible athletes and special people in my career, and Patrick is without question on that list of players. "The best part is he's still early in his career. He's a natural leader and always grinding, whether that's on the field, in the weight room, or watching films, he wants to be the best. He's a competitor and his team-mates feed off his energy. He makes us all better as an organization and we are blessed he's going to be our quarterback for years to come."
Earlier this offseason, Mahomes told CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones that he is optimistic that he would remain in Kansas City for the foreseeable future. With this, Mahomes becomes the fourth quarterback since 2011 to receive an extension before the start of his fourth season, joining Ryan Tannehill (Miami Dolphinsin 2015), Carson Wentz (Philadelphia Eaglesin 2019) and Jared Goff (Los Angeles Ramsin 2019).
No matter what "mechanisms" become guaranteed, the timing of the contract is a massive win for Mahomes and the Chiefs. Completing big business deals during the pandemic is complicated and will only get increasingly more so. Signing this contract before training camp was a priority for both sides and ensures Mahomes will not risk an injury playing on a rookie contract far below his value in 2020. His family's financial health is now secured for generations, and I'm never going to criticize a player for not maxing out every last dollar in exchange for long-term security. While this commitment provides both sides security, it's a reflection of how Kansas City has proven to be a football heaven for Mahomes. From the decision to let Mahomes learn behind Alex Smith to Andy Reid's play-calling to the organization's embrace of Mahomes supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, the organization has done well nurturing Mahomes' talent and impact. He would have transformed any team, but he clearly landed with the right one.
