Turkey, lately has been the talk of the world by its regressive policies to become the leader of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s president is now aiming to be the leader of all Muslim nations. By his speeches, international politics and ties with other nations, he is aiming to represent the Islamic Bloc in the United Nations.
Let’s discuss what are the key takeaways from his political views on different issues.
1) As we know that Turkey has close ties with Pakistan, seeing this opportunity of revoking Article 370 by Indian government, Imran Khan the Prime Minister of Pakistan is suggesting Turkey to raise concerns against this act done by India. Turkish foreign minister criticised India’s decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and said that “it did not contribute to any peace and stability but further complicated the situation”.
Apart from a repeated statements in accordance with President of China and Imran Khan on Kashmir issue, Turkey is also “radicalising Indian Muslims and recruit Islamic fundamentalists”, according to reports submitted by Indian intelligence.
According to this report, Turkish government fronts or outfits it supports (some which are linked to Erdogan family) have made deeper inroad in India via various streams such as Turkish state media, Educational institutes and NGOs. Many of them have links with Pakistan agency ISI making Turkey the second hub of ‘Anti-India campaign’. For instance Turkey has been providing lucrative scholarships and exchange programmes for Indian Kashmiri and Muslims students. The intel accused Turkish Embassy is forging alliances with Indian NGOs which run Anti-India propaganda. TUGVA, TB, YEI, TDF and TIKA are some of the government funded organisations.
2) Turkey has also suspended ties with UAE as they expresses ties with Israel. In the fear that other neighbouring Islamic countries will expresses diplomatic ties with Israel, Erdogan is seeking to pull back its ambassador from UAE and eliminating ties. He has increasingly styled himself against Israel over Palestine issue, Erdogan is now forcing other states of OIC to not support Israel and its allies. He is uniting all the Muslim nations to confront Israel, thus becoming the most popular Muslim leader. Turkey also seeking to become the leader of Islamic states
3) Turkey again clashed with Greece over its new maritime zone with Libya. The two countries often compete with each other over the Aegean sea, but this time it was the overlapping maritime zone b/w Greece-Egypt and Turkey-Libya. Turkey sent 3 search ships for any seismic activities and obtaining oil and gas resources from sea areas which Greece claims. Greece has warned Turkish foreign ministry and has raised the issue to EU, NATO and UNSC. Fortunately, the UNSC is backing Greece and has alerted Turkey from carrying out wrongful exploration plans. Both countries are at verge of declaring war as the clash has escalated quickly.
4) Pakistan along with Turkey and Malaysia has been thinking to form a new Islamic bloc separate from OIC and led by Turkey. The Kashmir issue in particular has become such an obsession for Imran Khan that he took the decade old economic ties with Saudi Arabia for granted and openly challenged the centrality of OIC in the Muslim world. The three countries planned to launch its agenda globally through ‘Islamic TV channel’ and a summit at Kuala Lumpur. Saudi Arabia warned Pakistan and threatened to end its $6.3 billion dollars ties with him. Pakistan deliberately wants to raise Kashmir issue at OIC, but strong ties of Saudi-India and UAE-India are restraining it. Ultimately, Pakistan’s foreign ministry threatened OIC that if they did not raised the issue, then it will form a new separate Islamic bloc with Turkey.
To conclude, such are the rising powers of Turkey to influence its outfits, NGOs and countries to form a bloc that will be against India and showing Islamic nation’s dominance on the world. They are constantly against UAE and Saudi Arabia when the two countries supported Qatar and given refuge to Kurdish organisation, thus motivating to form a separate bloc.
In all the rising power and political stance of Turkey is an important factor of India to increase ties with other strong Islamic states and to be a part of OIC. Also India should look after the social media handle, else the Indian youths and ‘Anti-India’ NGOs might get funded by Turkey, provoking the citizens to go up against its very own motherland. Such NGOs should not be formed and be banned.
