The Devil Wears Prada- AND Simons collection

The two designers came together for the first time during Milan Fashion Week in a very unprecedented move.

In this partnership debut, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons work as co-creative directors, bringing the most esoteric designers of the generation together. The two strongly opinionated designers came together to bring to life the most awaited collaboration in fashion. The partnership was made online on account of the current pandemic situation. An online show was filmed, which was followed by a live interview in which both the designers answered questions from the public. The news of the collaboration brought about a wave of creative excitement among fashion buffs, and the release didn’t disappoint.

Prada sent goodies and care packages to all their absent front row friends, reminding them that they were missed. Models walked into the carpeted, curtained space, and the cameras were visible in the live stream, as opposed to other online shows in which they have hidden away- as an attempt to highlight the importance of technology in the present times. With the models looking right into the camera, the show felt as real as it could be. Despite the show being held digitally, it was a huge success. People from all over the world joined the YouTube live stream to watch the show go down.

The show used sunshine yellow drapes as background for elegant vintage silhouettes. The collection consisted of brighter and prettier colors than one might have expected, which when seen in contrast to the general public mood owing to the rampant death and disease extent in today’s world, might be seen as an attempt to boost the public morale. Prada seemed to have the upper hand in design as the Prada logo was placed centrally, even though it was clearly stated by the designers that there was no power struggle between them throughout the collaborative process.

The two artists come from very different backgrounds, are motivated by very different factors, but share the same passion for art. They have both been known to support various political and human rights causes through their art. In the interview, they stated that their work was often driven by the need to create something meaningful, something that the collective subconscious of society believes in.

For Simons, this partnership was an opportunity to “relook at how creativity can evolve in today’s fashion system”. When the news of the partnership broke, Prada mentioned that “it’s a new wind. I never wanted to become a prisoner of my own style. I like to move forward.”
