Psychological pressure of getting success after engineering and its effect on mental health

“All of a sudden, you kind of realize you don’t have anything to do, you’ve just been lying in bed all day and saying that you’re going to look for jobs. Does success mean having a job in hand? Or we do it just for the sake of social acceptance. I realized something was wrong when I was looking for jobs but not trying hard. It was at that moment I realized that I wanted to study instead of doing a job. But then the question came, what will I tell to my parents who invested around 15-20 lakhs in my graduation thinking I will be successful and will have a great job once I am done with engineering. I wished I had realized that the popular phrase “Engineering Karlo life set hai” was only applicable to CS and IT students. This bitter truth was a reality of almost every student studying in Biotech, civil, Chemical and so-called mechanical (automobile, energy etc.)

I remember we had a company visit which was especially for the civil students, the package was 3.5 lakhs per year and only the toppers of the batch were eligible to give the exam. So if you are one above mentioned branch and want a core job (which was mentioned a dream job by our esteem university) the maximum u can aim is 3-5 lakh CTC. Will this be a definition of success? Yes, if you want to pursue your dream and have a genuine interest in the field, but then again the psychological pressure of parents and society haunt us, our mind says what will we tell everyone, that after investing so much money we will earn 20 thousand a month? I have seen people rejecting the offer and going to a job where you are getting a high paycheck but do you want to continue that job the rest of your life? We just compare our offers with our friends and relatives and end up taking something we are not even interested in.

Almost 70% of the students who were in the above-mentioned branch are not placed in the same field they were studying from the last 4 years. All because everyone feels success is directly related to how great your job is and not on your overall development. I have seen people doing a sales job, learning coding to get a job even when they have the least interest in that field.

We can see that the number of students receiving counselling is increasing. This hunger for success, directly and indirectly, affects our mental health. Don’t you think the numbers can be reduced if just having a job or the idea of being the best at everything was not there? The number of people getting admission in a college is increasing every year, it will reduce the chances of better placement every year and one will have to deal with that. The only way to get success and to be happy at what you are doing is by doing something you are good at, by doing something you won’t feel mentally ill, something that you genuinely love to do. The CTC certainly don’t decide how happy and successful you will be in later stages of life, do what you love, help others, guide others, be the best version of you, that’s the real success.
