Nike and MSCHF Reach Settlement

Nike filed a lawsuit against MSCHF Product Studios after it launched a pair of modified Nike Air Max 97s called ‘Satan Shoes’ created with rapper Lil Nas X, which carry the Nike “swoosh” logo and cost $1,018 a pair. The shoes are also printed with Luke 10:18, a biblical passage referring to Satan’s descent from heaven. Only 666 pairs were made.

On Thursday they reached a settlement in the trademark infringement dispute, however the terms of the deal were not disclosed. But it apparently includes an offer to let customers return their ‘Satan Shoes’ and ‘Jesus Shoes’ for a full refund. This was decided “in order to remove them from circulation”, Nike said in a statement.

Controversy has followed the footwear ever since its release last month. Nike said ‘Satan Shoes’ tricked out with pentagrams and human blood created “confusion and dilution in the marketplace” as if Nike was “endorsing satanism”. In any case, as of April 1, the well known "stock market of things" platform StockX said the 'Satan Shoe' is probably not going to factor among its listings, "given the inherent challenges in authenticating custom sneakers" that generally block their consideration in its index.
