NETFLIX TO STOP CHARGING INACTIVE USERS

Netflix recently said that it’ll now start cancelling accounts that haven’t watched anything in more than a year but are still paying for the subscription.

“You know that sinking feeling when you realize you signed up for something but haven’t used it in ages? At Netflix, the last thing we want is people paying for something they’re not using,” wrote Eddy Wu, Product Innovation.

According to the company, there are a few over hundred thousand of users who fall into this “inactive” category and it will now begin to suspend them. These inactive accounts constitute for less than half of one percent of Netflix’s overall member base.

The firm will send a notification asking the users of these dormant accounts if they want to prolong their membership. Users who don’t reply will have their accounts deactivated. Members can expect to receive emails or see in-app notifications this week.

In a blogpost, Wu also added that the company would save users' preferences for 10 months after their accounts are dropped. "Anyone who cancels their account and then rejoins within 10 months will still have their favorites, profiles, viewing preferences and account details just as they left them," he wrote.

Netflix has already witnessed 16 million new sign-ups in the first three months of 2020 and now, thanks to the lockdown as well as this new measure, it will undoubtedly help the company gain more popularity.
