Mirzapur Season 2

With the evolution of the internet and growing existence social media, we’ve seen a thing called Web-Series emerging, creating its place and taking over the digital space by storm, in a short period. The web series space has exploded in India in the last few years with a lot of them getting popularity. The kind of reception that Mirzapur received is exceptional. Despite being a violent show, Mirzapur was accepted by a majority of people. The sequel was eagerly awaited and arguably is the most awaited web series of 2020. Now that it’s finally out, does MIRZAPUR 2 match to that hype?

Mirzapur 2 begins exactly where season 1 ended. An injured Guddu Pandit ( Ali Fazal), along with Golu (Shweta Tripathi), is set on a journey of revenge. Munna Tripathi ( Divyendu Sharma) had killed his pregnant wife (Shreya Pilgaonkar) and shot his brother’s head open at a wedding where even the innocent groom was murdered. Guddu, as expected, focuses on building a new path that takes him directly to ‘Mirzapur ki gaddi’ that Kaleen Bhaiya (Pankaj Tripathi) plans to hand over to his son soon. While one will be expecting Guddu Bhaiya being such a gentleman and fierce full and more challenging, here in the start he appears a little defeated, the way Guddu Bhaiya used to establish himself the lion of Mirzapur seems missing. The makers have shown the transition and rise of female characters, from the moment Golu learns to pull the trigger to the scene when Veena Tripathi decides to ‘survive’ – it seems that the women in Mirzapur 2 finally not ready to give up. It's just that this time around, the series seems to be built on isolated moments rather than a seamlessly exciting narrative, something that was the hallmark of the first season. The screen lights up each time when Divyendu is there. He is a villain, of course, but then there is such childlike enthusiasm in him, coupled with inherent humour that he brings in most crass of the situations, that you can't help but wait for him to keep coming back. Watch out for how he gears up to re-establish his business empire.

Mirzapur 2 is bound to be talked about and also is bound to get record-breaking viewership.

Surprisingly, it is this very 'run' that actually 'slows' down the proceedings, and that too in a painful manner. With a dark feel to it (visually as well as literally), the scenes are long-drawn and also borderline depressing. Apart from the clichéd scenes of 'doctor-save-his life-else-you-would-be-killed', there are also unexciting pieces of conversations that make one wonder when the real drama begins. Expletives flow quite freely as well (and at many places, rather needlessly) and you wait for the drama to shift to Pankaj Tripathi and Divyendu. Also, it’s very interesting to see how new dynamics are formed between characters that didn’t have much to do with each other earlier. For instance, the association of Guddu with Golu, Shabnam (Shernavaz Jijina) with Guddu, and Golu and Guddu with Lala (Anil George). Before you realize, two camps are formed and battle lines get drawn. The makers reserve the best for the finale. The climactic fight keeps one on the edge of the seat. The cliffhanger end and the promise of the third season make for a fitting finale. This time, the theme is quite dark as the characters have lost their kin and are badly in the need for revenge. The writers succeed in getting this part right and also adding on to it in a way that does justice to the plot in hand.

On the whole, Mirzapur 2 is gripping and an entertaining revenge drama, despite the slow narrative and the lack of sufficient light and funny moments, the stellar cast, BGM, screenplay and bhaukaal easily makes up for the flaws.
