Hypocrisy and Media

By Ruchita Damodar

Have we been thinking or have our thoughts been framed by the influence of media?

It is an unignorable fact that media has the power to shape the mental makeup of the crowd. They hold the potential and duty to bring out the prevailing positivity and negativity in the society but is the broadcasted or printed media wrongly shaping our mind? Who holds the authority to bring out the genuineness of what media conveys to us.

It is inarguable that media has done commendable work in disclosing the ruthless and cruel happenings all around the various populations. But can we forget the other side of the coin where morality has been looked down? It hadn't been a while since the demise of the young actor, late Sushant Singh Rajput, that media sensationalised the departure of the bright talent. Can we look away from how the television media made graphic videos to portray the last ten minutes before the demise of late actor Sridevi?

Can we take no notice to the false news we are fed with that Dawood Ibrahim's 15,000 crores worth property was seized by UAE authorities? We have been a prey to the false facts our media feeds us with.

There have been infinite incidents when we could witness the two-faced dilemma of some news channels owned by representatives that do not let pure journalism uncover due to political or social concern. A strong statement can be made that our media has been biased for an uncountable number of times. It has been successful in tricking people by broadcasting unsuitable and unfit information at times in order to shoot up their ratings.

The reason for media dramatizing disaster and cruelty could be their audience themselves. Why are newspapers and TV broadcasts filled with disaster, corruption and incompetence? It may be because we’re drawn to depressing stories without realising, says psychologist Tom Stafford. There are innumerable shortcomings in the way our media portrays the truth of our society

Even after the countless limitations by news channels and print media, we must still acknowledge that our journalists have done their utmost to cover news from every corner of the world. We cannot ignore the fact that journalists have endangered their lives in order to cover the mishap in certain circumstances. Our journalists have shed blood sweat and tears into making a report that news channels may or may not televise depending on the TRP it may fetch or if it may hurt their owners in some way. But some provision must be provided to establish transparency in news and facts. We must focus on uniting the country, rather than dividing it.
