Harry Styles' Vogue Cover Controversy

Harry Styles, 26, became the first man to feature American Vogue solo with December’s issue. Shot by Tyler Mitchell, who was the first Black photographer of a vogue cover in September 2018, the singer wore a tuxedo jacket and gown given by Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci. He also poses topless in a Chopova Lowena kilt-inspired skirt.

The story points out how he breaks barriers with fashion. The One Direction singer explores gender fluidity in a lace ballgown and believes that putting barriers in your own life is just limiting yourself.

“Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with. What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away, I’ll go in shops sometimes, and I just find myself looking at the women’s clothes thinking they’re amazing.”

-Styles told Vogue.

Olivia Wilde also adds, “I hope that this brand of confidence as a male that Harry has — truly devoid of any traces of toxic masculinity — is indicative of his generation and therefore the future of the world,” Wilde says in the cover story. “I think he is in many ways championing that, spearheading that. It’s pretty powerful and kind of extraordinary to see someone in his position redefining what it can mean to be a man with confidence.”

However, every coin has two sides. While it might seem that he received appreciation towards this bold move, there were mixed reactions that broke the internet. Candace Owens and Ben Shapiro took to twitter to express their opinions. A tweet by Candace says, “There is no society that can survive without strong men. The East knows this. In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence. It is an outright attack. Bring back manly men.” Replying to this, Ben Shapiro says, “This is perfectly obvious. Anyone who pretends that it is not a referendum on masculinity for men to don floofy dresses is treating you as a full-on idiot.”

“You’re ignoring the fact that no society can survive without fem men, or masc women, or fem women, or people in between all of that”, “RuPaul’s drag race champion” Bob the Drag Queen replied. “The reason you feel the need to protect masculinity is because know EXACTLY how fragile it is. Truly words coming from a Queen!

Fans and celebrities expressed their support for the star in abundance. “Harry Styles is plenty manly, because manly is whatever you want it to be,” Jamil tweeted. “He’s 104% perfect.” Fans were particularly left speechless seeing a true gentleman and a bold star embracing his style. Harry Styles, visionary that he is, probably lives in a just and equal future in his head. Whatever the case might be, we all stan a king Harry Styles who never fails to amaze us with his flamboyant fashion sense!
