F.R.I.E.N.D.S: the much-awaited reunion

Although no one told us life was gonna be this way with a pandemic to fight, Friends fans finally have something to look forward to.

Friends was one of the most popular sitcoms of the 90s and it is hard to imagine that the last episode aired all the way back in 2004 and yet Friends remain a fan favorite among people of all ages. With fans begging for a reunion, the creators finally heeded to their demands, and a special was announced a year ago in February 2020. While the reunion was scheduled to air in May 2020, the Covid -19 pandemic had plans of its own and put a dent on the timeline.

But on April 11th, the official Instagram page of Friends revealed the much-awaited news that the shooting for the special has been wrapped. The reunion is set to air on HBO Max, although the premiere date is yet to be announced. But it is safe to say that the biggest task of getting all six leads together is out of the way.

Previously, there was a sequel released in 2004 centered around Joey Tribbiani, called ‘Joey’. As much as fans couldn’t get enough of Joey’s ‘How you doin’?’ and his love for food, it only ran for two seasons and was not nearly as popular as the original hit show. There was also another reunion in 2016 which simply wasn’t the same due to Matthew Perry’s absence.

The reunion will bring together Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, and David Schwimmer once again although the details of the special are a bigger secret than the ‘ugly naked guys' identity. The six stars are also executive producers along with co-creators Martha Kauffman and David Crane. The lead six have great chemistry outside of their sitcom days and are all close friends up to this day, so the reunion will definitely be an interesting watch.

When the Friends reunion was first announced all six of the leads posted the same photo on Instagram with the caption ‘It’s happening’ sending their fans into a frenzy. So will the special episode tell us about Ross and Rachel’s future, Monica and Chandler’s life in the suburbs, whether Joey came back from LA, if Mike and Phoebe have kids, or if they ever see Janice again? Unfortunately, no. While fans have many burning questions, some things are better left unanswered.

The little of what we do know is that the special will not be a revival nor will they be portraying their original characters. The reunion will be unscripted and will resemble more of a talk show with the actors conversing about their time on the show, behind-the-scenes footage, and more. There are also speculations of a cast reading and will even include some of the iconic props such as the water fountain from the theme song and some elements of Monica’s infamous apartment. David Schwimmer did reveal on his appearance on The Graham Norton Show that there is a surprise section that he wouldn’t want to give away.

In the meantime, while everyone eagerly waits for the reunion to arrive, fans can debate over whether Ross and Rachel were on a break and can rewatch for the hundredth time the beloved friends in their unforgettable apartment or having a laugh together at Central Perk. Hopefully, the special will be there for you soon enough.
