DURAVASA creating METANOIA

The Hindi puranas described Duravasa as a short-tempered rishi and it wasn't until recently that a bunch of students who belonged to a band redefined this name and the legacy attached to it. The VIT Music Club of the Vellore Institute of Technology (Vellore) always fascinates its audience by providing them with stimulating music that always serves as the building grounds for a lot of leading bands like Trash Talk music, Candies and Chaos, Obsidian Experience and so many others. Adding one more gem to its collection, a new progressive fusion band emerged in 2018, which always aimed high under the name of Duravasa and released their debut single “Bhaukal”, which gained popularity in no time.

From there, the guitarist of the band, Sarthak Dilawari started planning the band’s next masterpiece, 'METANOIA'. I vividly recall a conversation we had, where he mentioned that this was going to be a big achievement for him, if he were able to put it off. After continuous jamming and overnight band slots, they finally figured out the music supporting those riffs and further went ahead to produce this song. The main ideology behind this song was given by Sarthak Dilawari who quotes, “The song talks about how man has made this world a barren a desolate place all because of his unscrupulous desires. But now he starts repenting and calls out to God to help him and billions of others who are suffering because of their actions”. With this song they tried to convey that its high time that the humans of this world needs to change and they felt that METANOIA was their step towards it.

It was in January when the band started producing the song and by the end of the march, they were all set to send the track for final mastering. The track is a culmination of crisp and slappy bass lines by the bassist Joshua John, incredible keyboard patches and solo by the keyboardist Vasanth Ravin, sleek and monstrous double bass drumming by Abhinav Thapa , adding his classical touch to the band ,Shanmuka Sreenivas on violin, and with his amazing vocals, the lead vocalist, Devanshu Saran. The final mixing and mastering of the song were done by Thejus Nair.

Now there are some important facts to take note of here. Firstly, the song and its vocal lines were written by Sarthak Dilawari, who also sung few parts in the song as the other lead vocalist. Not to forget to mention the chilling screams by Abhinav Thapa and choir by some of the very talented vocalists of the VIT Music Club. The band came up with an interesting artwork for this project and they explain it by quoting, “we wanted the earth to bleed in purple as a symbol of calling out to God as purple is a highly spiritual symbolic colour”.

The song was officially released on all the platforms on 27th May 2020 at around 11 A.M. and within no time it was added in one of the leading playlists of the nation “Rock in India”. Being a part of this journey with this band as a vocalist of the choir, it was an immense pleasure of mine to see the dream come true and it helped to establish one of the most important fact for the budding musicians out there that keep jamming till the others start jamming to yours. With such a kickstart the band is finally ready to face the “metanoia” in their careers ahead.
