COTTAGECORE- The New Aesthetic

Soft fabrics, simple designs and neutral colours from the 80s making today’s apparels minimal. Does fashion repeat itself?

What is #cottagecore?

A trend that started in 2017 combines itself with fashion. Cottagecore is a style of clothing inspired by old simple times. It is an aesthetic that is all about softness and being gentle, not something that was seen until now. Pulling a lot of inspiration from history and pastoral past, flowy dresses and vintage hats have a strong youthful spin in today’s industry. This trend is popular on all social media sites including Facebook, Instagram and Tik-Tok with the Gen Z and younger millennials being the main demographic here.

Some pieces being used extensively in today’s market that have taken inspiration from the past are:

Puffy Sleeves

Apron Dresses and Dungarees

Gingham dresses

In the era of sustainable and eco-friendly fashion, these clothes are easily accessible in thrift stores. In today’s busy life it is essential for us to have our own ways of escapism. Being intrigued by flowers and gardening but not having enough time to do so is not an excuse that can be used for not being able to ‘get your mind off’ anymore because we can dress up in a way that gives us the same feeling while we choose to follow what’s actually trending.

We adopt some of the characteristics while carrying the outfit we choose to wear and these apparels seem to be a nice way out from the ecological and societal collapse, giving a calm and peaceful sensibility. While giving it a calm and serene look, the garments are feminine but not at all frilly, giving it a sophisticated look. The clothes are not at all feminine but are androgynous and also remove the gender bias in clothes. David Beckham’s Instagram moves towards a cottagecore look as he is wearing a flat cap or a woolly cardigan, conveying a more romanticised ideal of masculinity.

Cords and knitwear are your way to go. Colour combinations are minimal and crisp. They make it easier to look chic but in a sophisticated, artsy and playful way drawing its inspiration from the mid-’80s. Cottagecore clothing does not only give a minimal look but also suits the ideals of sustainable fashion and androgyny. As this new trend floods the pages of social media, it is safe to say that fashion does repeat itself.
